A number of our customers have chosen a fire table over a fire pit. Instead of a wood fire, a fire table typically has gas fire with flames rising through a bed of stones. It provides a warm centerpiece to sit around with friends without the need to keep adding wood to the fire.
Is a Fire Table a Threat to Composite Decking?
Though the fire might seem less vigorous than a raging wood fire, the gas fire of a typical fire table does present a problem for the decking boards beneath. Unlike most fire pits, fire tables are not open to the atmosphere below the fire bowl. This means that the heat can be trapped within its side walls. We believe this is what happened to our customer in Atlanta, whose use of a fire table on his rooftop deck resulted in a call to the fire department and the expense of replacing several decking boards. A properly sized DeckProtect under a fire table provides not only a heat barrier, but also a little more air flow over the deck.
