Fire Pits and Patios
Bricks and "pavers" are not exactly prone to catching fire, so most people don't worry about using a fire pit on their patios. However, there is evidence that excessive heat under a fire pit can cause damage, especially with repeated use. Over time, heat can cause small cracks or fissures and result in "spalling." Spalling is a sort of crumbling of concrete or brick and is most commonly caused when moisture gets into the fissures and then freezes in cold weather, causing it to expand.
